Troyes

France

Overview

Troyes Cathedral radiates a luminous, intelligence-bearing energy that visitors associate with the Templar connection and the extraordinary stained glass that floods the interior with colored light. The light within the cathedral creates an ever-shifting atmosphere that many experience as consciousness-altering, as if the medieval glaziers encoded spiritual knowledge into the patterns and colors of the glass. The Templar association adds a quality of esoteric depth to the devotional atmosphere, and sensitive visitors report perceiving layers of meaning in the architecture that go beyond conventional Christian symbolism. The energy is refined, intellectual, and illuminating, inviting states of contemplation where insight arises spontaneously.

History, Archaeology & Significance

Troyes Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, is a Gothic masterpiece in the Champagne region of France, constructed primarily during the 13th century. The city of Troyes has strong associations with the Knights Templar; it was here that the Council of Troyes in 1129 officially endorsed the Templar Order, with Bernard of Clairvaux presenting the Rule of the Temple. The cathedral is renowned for its extraordinary stained glass, spanning from the 13th to the 19th century, which constitutes one of the finest collections of medieval glass in Europe. The building incorporates both High Gothic and Flamboyant Gothic elements, and its nave, at 114 meters long, is among the largest in France.
