Stone Circle

The Sanctuary

Avebury, UK

Overview

The Sanctuary retains a powerful energetic presence despite the physical destruction of its stones, and visitors frequently describe it as one of the most unexpectedly moving sites in the Avebury landscape. The hilltop position offers expansive views across the Marlborough Downs, and the convergence of the West Kennet Avenue at this point creates a sense of arriving at a destination to which the entire landscape is oriented. Many report strong sensations of energy rising from the ground at the concrete post markers, as if the earth itself remembers the stone and timber circles that once stood here. The Sanctuary's energy is described as activating and initiatory, consistent with its apparent role as a ceremonial endpoint of the great processional avenue.

History, Archaeology & Significance

The Sanctuary was a Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age ceremonial structure on Overton Hill near Avebury in Wiltshire, England, dating to approximately 3000-2000 BC. Originally a series of concentric timber post rings later replaced by stone circles, the monument was connected to the main Avebury henge by the West Kennet Avenue, a processional way lined with paired standing stones extending over 1.5 miles. The Sanctuary was tragically destroyed by a local farmer in 1724, documented by the antiquarian William Stukeley who recorded the stones being broken up. Today concrete markers indicate where the stones and posts once stood. The site formed a crucial component of the vast Avebury ritual landscape, which includes Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow, and the Avebury henge itself.
