History, Archaeology & Significance
Mourneabbey is the site of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1199 in County Cork, Ireland, established as a daughter house under the austere monastic rule of the order. The ruins, though fragmentary, indicate a typical Cistercian plan emphasizing simplicity and integration with the surrounding watercourses and farmland. The abbey gave its name to the surrounding townland and parish, which persists to this day.
