History, Archaeology & Significance
Leuven is a historic Belgian city whose university, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, was founded in 1425 and is the oldest Catholic university in the world still in continuous operation. The city's intellectual and spiritual heritage spans six centuries of theological scholarship, scientific inquiry, and artistic patronage. The magnificent Gothic town hall (1448-1469) and the Romanesque St. Peter's Church (built on 11th-century foundations) anchor a cityscape rich in medieval architecture. The university library, twice destroyed and rebuilt, symbolizes the resilience of human knowledge.
