History, Archaeology & Significance
La Bastida is a Bronze Age fortified settlement in Totana, Murcia, dating to approximately 2200 BC and associated with the Argaric culture of southeastern Iberia. Excavations have revealed massive defensive walls, a monumental gateway, and an advanced water management system unprecedented in prehistoric Europe. The site represents one of the earliest known urban centers in western Europe, with evidence of complex social hierarchy and metallurgical production.
