History, Archaeology & Significance
Kourion is an ancient city-kingdom on the southwestern coast of Cyprus, inhabited from the Neolithic period through the early Byzantine era. Its spectacular cliff-top Greco-Roman theatre, the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, elaborate floor mosaics, and early Christian basilica reflect successive layers of civilization spanning over 3,000 years. The city was devastated by an earthquake in 365 CE, preserving a remarkable archaeological snapshot of late Roman daily life.
