Devils Tower

Wyoming, USA

Overview

Devils Tower is one of the most energetically commanding sites in North America—a vertical column of stone that functions as a massive antenna connecting earth energy to sky. Visitors universally report a sense of awe and humbling presence, as the tower seems to project a field of silent authority that stills the mind and opens the heart. The energy is strongly ascending, pulling awareness upward and outward, which may explain why so many tribal traditions associate the tower with ascent, protection, and the bridge between the human and spirit worlds. The columnar basalt amplifies and directs energy with unusual precision, and many experience heightened dream activity and visionary states after spending time in the tower's field.

History, Archaeology & Significance

Devils Tower (known as Bear Lodge or Mato Tipila to the Lakota) is a stunning igneous intrusion rising 867 feet above the Belle Fourche River in northeastern Wyoming. Formed from phonolite porphyry magma approximately 50 million years ago, its distinctive columnar jointing was exposed as surrounding sedimentary rock eroded away. The tower is sacred to more than 20 Native American tribes, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Crow, and Arapaho, each of whom holds origin stories connecting the tower to bears, maidens, and the protective power of the Creator. It became the first U.S. National Monument in 1906 under Theodore Roosevelt. Prayer bundles and offerings are regularly placed at its base, and tribal ceremonies continue there, particularly during the June solstice period.
