History, Archaeology & Significance

Deep Creek Spring in Oregon lies within the ancestral territory of the Northern Paiute people, who inhabited the high desert regions of the Great Basin for thousands of years. Springs in this arid landscape were critically important—not only as water sources but as spiritually significant places where the power of the earth was understood to emerge. The Paiute held springs as sacred sites inhabited by water spirits and conducted ceremonies to honor and maintain the health of these life-giving sources. Deep Creek and its associated springs supported seasonal camps and served as waypoints along migration routes between summer and winter territories.
