History, Archaeology & Significance
Cerro de Taos (also known as Taos Mountain or Pueblo Peak) is the sacred mountain of Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico, rising to over 12,300 feet in the Sangre de Cristo Range. Blue Lake, nestled near its summit, has been central to Pueblo spiritual practice for over a thousand years and was returned to Taos Pueblo ownership in 1970 after a 64-year legal battle. The mountain and lake remain closed to non-Pueblo visitors, reflecting their paramount religious significance.
