The Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Martin-du-Canigou, founded in 1009 AD, was built dramatically into the mountainside at 1094 metres elevation. The summit has been the site of midsummer solstice bonfires (Flama del Canigó) since at least the medieval period, a tradition revived in 1955 that now sees the flame distributed to communities across Catalan lands.
