Stone Circle

Almendres Stone Circle

Évora, Portugal

Overview

Almendres emanates one of the most ancient energetic signatures of any stone circle in Europe, carrying the consciousness imprint of over 8000 years of continuous sacred use. The energy here is deeply primal and feminine, connected to the earth mother traditions of Old Europe. Visitors report feeling drawn into a timeless space where the boundaries between human consciousness and the living earth dissolve. The carved symbols on the stones seem to activate when approached with reverent attention, and the site's remote cork-oak setting preserves an atmosphere of undisturbed sanctity.

History, Archaeology & Significance

The Almendres Cromlech near Évora in Portugal is one of the oldest and largest megalithic complexes in the Iberian Peninsula, dating from approximately 6000 BC in its earliest phase. The site contains 95 surviving monoliths arranged in two distinct groups: an earlier elliptical formation and a later circular arrangement added around 5000-4000 BC. Many stones bear carved symbols including circles, spirals, and schematic human figures that represent some of the earliest symbolic expression in Western Europe. The complex predates Stonehenge by over 2000 years and demonstrates that sophisticated astronomical and ceremonial architecture developed very early in Atlantic Europe. The site was rediscovered in 1966 and has been partially restored.

Rory's Field Notes

Europe's largest stone circle complex. Two Emperor Dragon lines cross, creating a rare double Type 5 node. The air literally hums at solstice sunrise.
