The Void-of-Course Moon

A timing consideration drawn from astrological tradition. When you're planning ceremony or celebration at a sacred site, it's worth knowing when the Moon is "void of course" — and choosing another window.

What it is

As the Moon travels through the zodiac it forms a series of major aspects (angles) to the other planets. After it makes its last major aspect in a sign — and before it enters the next sign — the Moon is said to be void of course. These periods can last anywhere from a few minutes to most of a day.

In the electional tradition (choosing favourable times to begin things), a void-of-course Moon is considered an unsettled, "drifting" period. The old maxim is that "nothing will come of" what is started while the Moon is void — intentions set then tend not to land or carry as they otherwise would.

Why it matters for gatherings at nodes

A celebration, initiation, or focused ceremony at a sacred site is, in essence, the beginning of something — an intention offered into a powerful field. Many practitioners therefore avoid holding celebrations or ceremony at nodes while the Moon is void of course, treating it as a form of lunar interference that muddies otherwise clear energy.

The practical guidance is simple: when you're choosing the hour for a gathering, check that the Moon is not void of course, and shift your timing if it is. The window is often only a few hours, so a small adjustment is usually all that's needed.

Not the same as a Moon Phase Line

This is a question of timing, and comes from astrology rather than geobiology. It's separate from the Moon Phase Lines in Rory's model, which are energy lines in the land. Both are worth being aware of; they are different things.

How to find Void-of-Course times

You don't need to calculate it by hand. Void-of-course periods are published in advance in lunar calendars and astrological ephemerides. To find them:
